VPN words, in plain language
The words you meet on our pages and in the app, each in a sentence or two.
- VPN
- An app that hides what you do online from your internet provider and the Wi-Fi you join, and shows sites a different address.
- IP address
- The address that tells each site you visit where your connection comes from, roughly which country and town. With KazaVPN on, sites see one of our servers' addresses instead.
- Internet provider
- The company that brings the internet to your home or phone. With KazaVPN on, it sees that you are online, but not the sites you open.
- Public Wi-Fi
- A network you join at a café, hotel, airport or station. Whoever runs it can see which sites you visit while a VPN is off.
- Server
- One of our computers in a country you connect through. The sites you open see its address instead of yours.
- Location
- The country, and with KazaVPN Premium the city, that you connect through. On Free we choose it for you.
- Encryption
- Scrambling what you send so that only the one it is meant for can read it. With KazaVPN on, the network you are on cannot read your connection.
- No-logs policy
- Our promise to keep no record of the sites you visit. Our no-logs page lists everything we keep about you, in its entirety.
- Kill switch
- A setting that keeps your device offline if the VPN connection drops, so nothing leaves it unprotected. In KazaVPN it is called Safety Net.
- DNS
- The internet's address book. Before a site opens, your device asks for its address, and whoever answers can see which sites you look up.
- DNS leak
- When your device asks for sites' addresses outside the VPN, so your internet provider can still see what you look up. Our DNS leak test checks for it.
- WebRTC leak
- When a website reads your real address through a feature browsers use for calls and video. Our WebRTC leak test checks for it.
- Tracker blocking
- A switch that stops many ads, trackers and known harmful sites before they load, in every app on your device. In KazaVPN it is called Tracker Shield.
- Auto-connect
- A setting that turns the VPN on by itself, so you never have to remember.
- Apps that connect directly
- On Android, apps you choose, such as your bank's, connect without KazaVPN while everything else stays private.
- Account number
- A sign-in made of a number alone, so you can have an account without giving us an email.
